Chiropractic Care for Pregnancy
Lower back pain affects most women at some point in pregnancy. Care can be adapted safely at every stage - before, during and after.
At a glance
- Why it happens
- Weight gain shifts your centre of gravity forward into the pelvis, loading the lower back and the other pelvic joints.
- When it peaks
- Usually the third trimester, when the baby is gaining the most weight.
- What we offer
- Specialised techniques adapted for pregnancy, at both clinics, before, during and after.

Severe lower back pain is one of the most common complaints in pregnancy, and it is usually the physical strain of pregnancy itself that causes it.
At some time throughout their pregnancy, 50–70% of pregnant women feel lower back discomfort, according to the British Pregnancy Association. Due to the baby gaining the greatest weight during the third trimester, the back discomfort often peaks around this time.
The mechanism is straightforward. A woman’s body goes through a variety of physiological changes to accommodate a developing baby, and the weight gain moves her centre of gravity forward into the pelvis. The lower back and the other pelvic joints take the additional strain.
Additional Stress as Pregnancy Progresses
The further along the pregnancy, the more load goes through the lower back and the more pronounced the curve of the lower spine becomes.
If there is already a history of lower back problems, there is a strong risk that pregnancy will make them worse - enough to make everyday tasks like getting dressed or working difficult, and enough to complicate childbirth.
A lower back under sustained strain can bring other problems with it. Leg cramps, stomach cramps and constipation have all been reported.

Prenatal Care at Cedar Tree Chiropractic
We can provide individual treatment before, during and after your pregnancy. Regular visits to our chiropractors can reduce, and sometimes prevent, the aches and problems that commonly come with it.
Getting Adjustments While Pregnant
Chiropractic treatment is one of several straightforward ways of helping the body prepare for pregnancy and delivery. Specialised adjusting techniques are available to accommodate pregnancy and reduce its problems.
Many pregnant women who choose chiropractic care claim that it enabled them to deliver their babies with little to no pain medication. Studies have also shown that having routine care may shorten labour times.
If you have questions about any of this, ask us. We are here to look after you and your baby in a controlled, safe and caring way.
Questions we get asked
Is chiropractic care suitable for everyone?
Yes. We consider your medical history at consultation and adapt our techniques to your health status and age. We treat patients from two weeks old through to their 90s, including pregnant women, for whom we have specialised pregnancy pillows.
Will I have to remove items of clothing during treatment?
It depends on your individual circumstances. Where it is necessary, you will be provided with a suitable gown for modesty.
How long will it take for me to recover?
Recovery timelines vary depending on a number of factors. We take the time to understand your symptoms, lifestyle and goals before recommending the most appropriate course of care.
