Headaches & Migraines
Too many people in Burton-on-Trent and Derby live with headaches and migraines. A great deal of it is driven by tension in the neck and shoulders - which is treatable.
At a glance
- What a migraine is
- A severe, throbbing headache, often with nausea and sensitivity to light and sound, typically lasting four to 72 hours.
- Where we look
- Tight neck and shoulder muscles and stiff joints in the neck and upper back, which both cause headaches and worsen them.
- What treatment does
- Releasing that tension improves mobility and reduces how severe and how frequent the headaches are.

Most of the people we see about this have had it for years, and many of them have stopped expecting anything to help.
Migraines are headaches that can be extremely painful and throbbing, and they rarely come alone - nausea and sensitivity to light and sound are frequently present alongside them. Most last between four and 72 hours.
Many people also experience an “aura”, a visual warning that a migraine is coming. Most women who suffer from migraines are between the ages of 10 and 40.
Chiropractic Care for Headaches and Migraines
The goal of chiropractic treatment is to realign misaligned cervical vertebrae and restore optimum spinal health. Realigning them can relieve or stop many different types of headache.
As muscles relax and nerve irritation is lessened, people with chronic headaches frequently find relief within only a few visits.
Prevention is preferable to treatment. Chiropractic therapy may also help delay the development of migraines, and can be used to stop recurrent headaches and migraines returning.

How Are Headaches Treated?
Because tight shoulder and neck muscles both cause headaches and aggravate existing ones, that is where our treatment concentrates.
Relaxing the tight muscles across the neck and shoulders, along with any stiff joints in the neck and upper back, greatly reduces the overall tension there. That improves mobility and lessens the severity and frequency of headaches.
Chiropractors work with the body to restore it to its optimal state of function, which is what makes us well placed to help with the suffering and annoyance headaches bring.
Questions we get asked
What is an adjustment?
An adjustment, also known as manipulation, is a specific technique used by chiropractors to improve the function of joints in the body and the nervous system. Misaligned joints cause stiffness, inflammation and pain; an adjustment realigns them so they can function properly.
What is the popping sound?
During treatment, it is common to hear a little "pop". This signifies a release of gas from a stiff joint, similar to the sensation when a person clicks their knuckles. It is safe and painless.
How long will it take for me to recover?
Recovery timelines vary depending on a number of factors. We take the time to understand your symptoms, lifestyle and goals before recommending the most appropriate course of care.
