Shoulder Pain
The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body, and that mobility is exactly what leaves it vulnerable to so many different injuries.
At a glance
- Common causes
- Neck and upper back problems, arthritis, repetitive movement, sporting activity and road accidents.
- Worth checking
- Pain lasting more than a week, difficulty raising your arm overhead, or pain that gets worse in the evening.
- Often referred
- Much shoulder pain actually comes from the neck, because the nerves that supply the arm and shoulder originate there.

As the body’s most mobile joint, the shoulder is vulnerable to a wide variety of injuries and conditions. Among the more common causes of shoulder pain are neck and upper back problems, arthritis, repetitive motion, sporting activity and car accidents.
Diagnosis is harder here than in most joints. The movement and strength needed for normal function come from ligaments, tendons and muscles working together, which makes identifying the part actually at fault more challenging.
We have helped thousands of people with shoulder pain. Returning to normal can be a difficult process, but as with any medical problem it starts with identifying where the discomfort is coming from.
Common Symptoms
The following signs indicate an urgent need for a shoulder assessment:
- Having trouble extending your arm above your head
- Difficulty or discomfort while transporting goods
- Increasing pain in the evening
- An odd cracking or clicking sound while moving the joint
- Pain that has lasted more than one week
Getting the Diagnosis Right
As with most disorders, the best therapy depends on where the problem originated, which makes a correct diagnosis the important stage of the assessment.
Using the clinical data from your medical history, modern imaging tools and orthopaedic testing, a chiropractor can identify the precise source of your discomfort quickly. The treatment plan is then built around that diagnosis.

Treatment for Shoulder Pain
According to research, a great many cases of shoulder discomfort are actually the result of referred pain from the neck. The nerves of the neck supply the arm and shoulder, so neck problems frequently contribute to shoulder problems - and can be treated successfully with traditional chiropractic techniques.
If the shoulder pain continues after any spinal imbalance has been corrected, tell your chiropractor straight away. Additional manual and passive treatments are frequently used alongside the primary care to speed recovery.
Whether the pain is coming from the spine or from injury to the shoulder joint itself, it needs a thorough examination first.
Questions we get asked
How long will it take for me to recover?
Recovery timelines vary depending on a number of factors. We take the time to understand your symptoms, lifestyle and goals before recommending the most appropriate course of care.
Will I have to remove items of clothing during treatment?
It depends on your individual circumstances. Where it is necessary, you will be provided with a suitable gown for modesty.
What is an adjustment?
An adjustment, also known as manipulation, is a specific technique used by chiropractors to improve the function of joints in the body and the nervous system. Misaligned joints cause stiffness, inflammation and pain; an adjustment realigns them so they can function properly.
