Chiropractic Adjustment

Our core treatment: gentle, specific pressure applied by hand to joints that are not moving as they should.

At a glance

What it is
Gentle pressure applied by hand to realign joints that are not functioning efficiently.
What it feels like
Safe and painless, often with a small “pop” as gas releases from the joint - much like cracking your knuckles.
Beyond the spine
All our practitioners have completed further training, so we adjust joints throughout the body, not only the spine.

Chiropractic adjustment - also known as a joint adjustment - is a chiropractic-specific technique in which the chiropractor uses gentle pressure to realign joints that are not functioning efficiently.

Providers in Burton-on-Trent and Derby are best known for treating spinal injuries. All of our practitioners have completed further training that allows them to treat a variety of joint problems, not only those of the spine.

What Happens at Your Appointment

Your chiropractor will tell you which areas they would like to investigate further during the physical examination. A full spinal examination is then performed, before focusing specifically on the area or areas of interest. Clinical gowns are provided where necessary, so that modesty is kept at all times.

By the end of the appointment, your chiropractor will discuss your diagnosis and explain the recommended course of care.

  1. Book Directly

You do not need a referral from your GP. Chiropractic is a primary healthcare profession in the UK, so you can come straight to us - including evening and Saturday appointments.

  2. Your First Consultation

We take your full medical history and examine you properly. Nothing is assumed from the spot that hurts, because the place you feel pain is rarely the place it starts.

  3. A Diagnosis in Plain English

We explain what we have found and what is causing it, then recommend the most appropriate course of care for your symptoms, lifestyle and goals.

About the Treatment

Adjusting the joints of the spine corrects misalignment between the bones, and in doing so takes pressure off specific joints, discs, muscles and - most importantly - the nervous system. A healthy nervous system promotes repair, and therefore recovery. Where it is needed, we can adjust many of the other joints in the body to improve their function.

Before any adjustment, your chiropractor will explain the rationale behind the treatment in detail and talk you through the process, so that you are comfortable with the technique. It is safe and painless.

The adjustment often results in a small popping or clicking sound - what we call a “cavitation”. That audible release is bubbles of gas leaving the joint, very similar to the sound people make when they crack their knuckles. Realigning the joints in this way allows the body to heal efficiently.

Questions we get asked

What is an adjustment?

An adjustment, also known as manipulation, is a specific technique used by chiropractors to improve the function of joints in the body and the nervous system. Misaligned joints cause stiffness, inflammation and pain; an adjustment realigns them so they can function properly.

What is the popping sound?

During treatment, it is common to hear a little "pop". This signifies a release of gas from a stiff joint, similar to the sensation when a person clicks their knuckles. It is safe and painless.

Will I have to remove items of clothing during treatment?

It depends on your individual circumstances. Where it is necessary, you will be provided with a suitable gown for modesty.
