Neck Pain
Neck pain is one of the most common problems we see, and one of the most misunderstood. Most of it comes from how people spend their days rather than from any single injury.
At a glance
- Why it happens
- Hours spent looking down at screens, plus tension carried across the neck and shoulders, load the joints and muscles of the neck.
- How we treat it
- Usually by working above and below the painful area, because the place neck pain is felt is rarely the place it starts.
- What to expect
- Taking pressure off the inflamed joints often makes a significant difference from the first session.

Thousands of people in Burton-on-Trent and Derby live with neck pain, and most of them have come to treat it as normal. It is extremely common. It is not normal.
Much of it traces back to how we spend the day. Long stretches looking down at a screen or a phone strain the joints and muscles of the neck, and modern life supplies a steady run of small stresses that settle as tension across the neck and shoulders.
Treating the Cause, Not the Symptom
Neck pain is difficult to treat if you do not know where it is actually coming from. Unlike many practices, we look for the cause rather than working on the place that hurts.
In practice that usually means treating above and below the painful area. If the pain sits at the base of the neck, we will often work on the top of the neck and the upper back, which relieves pressure on the inflamed joints lower down. Most patients feel a significant difference after the first session.

A Diagnosis in Plain English

Prevalent vs Normal?
Because so many people experience neck pain regularly, it has come to be accepted as an ordinary part of daily life. That is the trap.
It is why patients arrive with problems that can no longer be treated non-invasively and that may need surgery and a long recovery. Neck pain is prevalent. It is not normal, and it does not have to be permanent.
You do not have to end up as a neck pain statistic. Dealt with before it becomes entrenched, recovery is usually quick and uncomplicated.
Questions we get asked
What is an adjustment?
An adjustment, also known as manipulation, is a specific technique used by chiropractors to improve the function of joints in the body and the nervous system. Misaligned joints cause stiffness, inflammation and pain; an adjustment realigns them so they can function properly.
What is the popping sound?
During treatment, it is common to hear a little "pop". This signifies a release of gas from a stiff joint, similar to the sensation when a person clicks their knuckles. It is safe and painless.
How long will it take for me to recover?
Recovery timelines vary depending on a number of factors. We take the time to understand your symptoms, lifestyle and goals before recommending the most appropriate course of care.
